What competence do you need to implement ISO 17298?
ISO 17298:2025 is the first international biodiversity management standard, published on 7 October 2025. No auditor certification scheme exists to date, and we do not claim otherwise. The Level 1 training gives a team the foundations to take on the standard, ahead of a scheme being put in place.
ISO 17298:2025 was published on 7 October 2025. In thirty pages, it sets out the first international framework for biodiversity management, developed by AFNOR within ISO technical committee ISO/TC 331. It is designed to work alongside ISO 14001, ISO 26000 and the TNFD framework.
What the text says
The standard is recent, and its implementation ecosystem just as much. To date, no ISO 17298 auditor certification scheme has been published, and no named qualification is therefore required to apply it. We say so plainly rather than imply a requirement that does not yet exist.
This gap is temporary. Building biodiversity competence now means getting ahead of a framework set to become more structured. This page will be revised as soon as a certification scheme appears.

What the training provides
The Level 1 training gives a non-specialist team the foundations to take on a biodiversity management approach: the issues and ecosystem services, ecological diagnosis, the avoid-reduce-offset sequence, and the vocabulary needed to work with an ecologist.
It does not certify to ISO 17298, which would make no sense while no scheme exists, and does not claim to. It prepares the team for the approach. The certificate, named, documents that build-up of competence.
