Why Effinature is today the best choice for real-estate biodiversity
A factual, sourced and verifiable case
Every statement rests on a criterion-level mapping between the Effinature standard and international frameworks. The figures come from this work, not from a marketing narrative.
1. The evidence base: ~2,950 reasons, not an opinion
Effinature was mapped, criterion by criterion, against 83 frameworks. Result: ~2 869 correspondences, each with a typed relation (SKOS vocabulary), a confidence level, a rationale and a source citation.
- 1,322 correspondences with comparable frameworks and labels,
- 890 with sustainability reporting and finance frameworks,
- 636 with regulation and public policy.
This is a traceable, auditable and defensible equivalence matrix — not an argument from authority.
2. The most complete on the market — demonstrated, not asserted
On a neutral base of 31 site-biodiversity capabilities (surveys, biotope factor, continuities, mitigation hierarchy, net gain, species and shelters, water, pollution, living soils, health, worksite, management, monitoring, governance, land…), applied identically to every framework:
| Framework | Breadth (domains /31) | Depth (criteria) | Completeness index /100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Effinature | 25 | 124 | 90 |
| OID / BIG | 25 | 52 | 61 |
| BCA Green Mark / CBI | 23 | 44 | 55 |
| SITES | 16 | 67 | 53 |
| ARB Île-de-France | 24 | 26 | 49 |
An honest reading: on domain breadth, Effinature is co-leader (25/31, tied with OID/BIG). It is depth — 124 operational criteria — that places it alone at the top once both dimensions are combined. Where others set an objective, Effinature prescribes measurable requirements (CBSh, IVE, IVS, ITCE indices), evidence modes and on-site verifications.
3. It covers other frameworks — and goes beyond
Within the applicable biodiversity scope, Effinature covers most criteria of comparable frameworks: OID/BIG 39/47, ARB Île-de-France 23/25, ISO 17298 10/10, IFC PS6 16/18. And it adds dozens of criteria the others lack ("and more"): detailed fauna protocols, shelters and roosts, beekeeping, living soils, light and noise pollution, governance by a Biodiversity Partner, end-of-project ecological assessment. See the detailed inverse coverage →
4. It makes the developer "reporting-ready"
Effinature directly feeds the requirements of major reporting and finance frameworks — a decisive asset against the CSRD and investor expectations: TNFD 33/34 requirements fed, SBTN 16/16, GRESB 15/16, EU Taxonomy (objective 6) 14/14, IFC PS6 / World Bank ESS6 for international financing, ESRS E4, GRI 101, CDP, BNG. An Effinature-certified project produces ecological evidence usable as-is in sustainability reporting.
5. It is aligned with regulation
Effinature implements, at project level, key regulatory and strategic frameworks: French Environmental Code 19/19, National Biodiversity Strategy 2030 15/16, Habitats-Birds Directives / Natura 2000 13/13, mitigation hierarchy doctrine, Kunming-Montreal GBF, EU Nature Restoration regulation, net-zero-land-take, Planning Code.
6. A trustworthy certification
Effinature is delivered by IRICE, a certification body accredited by Cofrac (no. 5-0655, ISO/IEC 17065), for new construction, renovation, development and operation. This is a guarantee of independence and rigour few biodiversity approaches can offer (scope available at www.cofrac.fr).
7. Honest about its limits — and continuously improving
The approach explicitly identifies what Effinature does not cover, and why. The vast majority of gaps fall outside a project's ecological scale (financial issues, corporate governance, social amenities). A few gaps are genuine improvement candidates, already on the roadmap (biodiversity-based depollution, bird-safe glazing, net-gain additionality testing). This transparency is the opposite of equivalence greenwashing: it makes the case credible and defensible.
Effinature is today the most complete and most detailed real-estate biodiversity standard, co-leader in domain coverage and alone at the top in granularity, with ~2 869 documented correspondences linking it to 83 international frameworks, and a Cofrac-accredited certification.
