Biodiversity as a project lever

Understand, structure, act. IRICE is publishing a series of short articles designed to help decision-makers integrate biodiversity into real estate projects in a clear, measurable and operational way. Aimed at local authorities, project owners, developers and investors, these articles address recurring sticking points, existing tools, and concrete levers for making biodiversity a project asset, not a formal constraint. ➤ All content is written by the IRICE team based on real cases, field feedback and shared experience.

Effinature, BPS, Biodiversity Partners: what's authoritative, what can't be improvised

Monday, May 5, 2025

In the face of the proliferation of labels, standards and discourse on biodiversity, IRICE points out a simple distinction: there can be no assessment without a method, no certification without a framework, and no legitimacy without empowerment. This text reviews the principles underpinning Effinature and BPS, and the structuring role of Biodiversity Partners.

Certification or diagnosis: two logics, one need for rigor

In a context where declarations in favor of biodiversity are multiplying in development projects, the need for a clear framework is no longer a matter of debate. What is now in question is the legitimacy of those who speak in the name of nature:

  • Who really certifies?
  • Who evaluates evidence?
  • Who can do this?

At IRICE, our response is based on two complementary but strictly controlled tools:

  • Effinature, the biodiversity certification standard recognized for its methodological robustness,
  • Biodiversity Performance Score (BPS): evidence-based performance diagnostics, without declarative scoring or self-attribution.

An intangible principle: formal empowerment

Both Effinature and BPS are reserved for specifically authorized personnel. This requirement guarantees a continuous chain of responsibility, without dilution or personal interpretation.

  • Authorization is personal, time-limited and auditable.
  • It cannot be transferred, claimed or extended without explicit validation.
  • All public references (media, services, publications) must be justified.

This rule also applies to former contributors, former collaborators or people who took part in the development phase of the repository. Knowing Effinature is not the same as being authorized. That's where rigor begins.

Why this rigor? For Whom?

This requirement is not symbolic: it protects projects. It protects :

  • project owners, who must be able to rely on verifiable diagnostics and enforceable certifications,
  • local authorities, who are looking for long-term guarantees,
  • project managers or technical partners who want to work within a clear, recognized framework.

It also preserves the efforts of all the partners already involved, who play the game of method, verification and up-to-date expertise.

Next session: join the official network

The next Biodiversity Partners (Effinature & BPS) accreditation session will start in June 2025. It is aimed at biodiversity consultants, design offices, in-house referents and real estate players wishing to make a credible and structured statement.

📧 To apply or obtain the program

In brief

  • Effinature: to certify a project's biodiversity performance.
  • BPS: to diagnose, guide and objectify.
  • IRICE: to ensure that only authorized actors can intervene, speak, represent or transmit.

IRICE does not delegate. IRICE empowers.
